I teach lessons online, using Zoom.

“But wait,” you say. “Online guitar lessons? Does that even work?”

It actually works quite well.

I've been teaching lessons online since 2018, two years before the pandemic shifted so many interactions online. First I used Skype and then later switched to Zoom. I find there are many benefits to online instruction.

There's a different kind of focus that happens with online teaching. Because I'm not physically in the room with the student, they assume more responsibility from the beginning.

It's up to them to tune their guitar, to keep their papers organized. I’m there to help verbally, but they develop a specific type of confidence, because they're doing everything themselves.

There's no one in the room to adjust their fingers – they have to watch and listen and adapt on their own. I’ve seen this develop into a greater confidence on the instrument at a faster rate.

But you don’t have to take my word for it.

Here’s what some of my students have to say:

“About five years ago my daughter started Zoom guitar lessons with Jason, and it was one of the best parenting decisions I have ever made.  Over the years, we have had to drop other activities because of schedule conflicts, but with zoom lessons we have been able to easily continue her sessions year after year.  I also think that Zoom lessons have allowed my daughter to be more relaxed in her own home environment.

Jason is incredibly patient and encouraging. He is always pointing out things my daughter is doing well and helping her tackle new challenges. He has taken an instrument that is very difficult to learn and made it feel not only manageable but fun. These lessons have been great in building my daughters confidence and fostering a sense of accomplishment.”

“ As an adult beginner, Zoom lessons were a low stress way to start that I could easily fit into my day.”

- Rebecca, current student

“Jason is an amazing guitar teacher. My skills have significantly improved since I started lessons with him. I love that he offers lessons over the computer, it makes it so easy to have weekly sessions. Over the computer I am able to see how Jason plays each chord and listen to the rhythm of each measure; I think I get everything I would from an in-person lessons and never have to leave my house.

Each week he chooses songs that are fun to play, but also help me to work on important skills. He is able to easily break down new skills and is very patient and encouraging. I really enjoy my lessons with him.”

- Nora, current student

“I began my guitar lessons with Jason six years ago, starting as an adult with virtually no background in music.  I had been thinking about trying to learn to play an instrument for a number of years and was particularly interested in guitar, but had been hesitating for a long time.

When someone told me about Jason and what an excellent teacher he is for students of all ages and abilities, I finally got up the courage to give it a try. My initial anxiety evaporated immediately under Jason’s patient, kind instruction. Now, my weekly Zoom lessons are one of the highlights of my week, and the online format works perfectly and helps lessons fit easily into my busy schedule.

As a long-time, immensely accomplished, professional musician, Jason’s accessible arrangements of interesting and varied music serve as the basis for lessons that are always fun and always at just the right level of challenge. I’ve achieved things I never imagined possible and I know that’s because I was lucky enough to connect with this amazing and very special teacher.”

“ [With Zoom lessons] it feels like you’re sitting next to him. You can still learn the same or even more because you can be more focused in your own learning environment. “

- Caleb, current student

“ We started Zoom lessons out of necessity during the pandemic. It went so well that we continued on Zoom afterwards. It is so much easier than juggling after school activities and transportation.”

- Rebecca, mother of current student

“For nearly 30 years, I spent my time ham-fistedly playing a guitar along with various recordings of favorite artists, trying to at least sound passably close.  I'd practice off and on, making little real progress.

7-8 years years ago, I took the plunge, and began taking guitar lessons with Jason. He soon got me into finger-picking (which I'd never even attempted), and had me practicing and playing songs by artists as diverse as Blind Lemon Jefferson, the Beatles, and even Ennio Morricone.  Jason is very patient, and he teaches me each song's melodies and basslines, and how to integrate both into my playing.

Although they began as in-person, we switched to doing our lessons via Zoom during Covid.  I soon found that. with Zoom, commuting to and from lessons was no longer a factor (especially in foul winter weather).  Additionally, in the rare event of a schedule conflict, Zoom made it easy to do our lesson at a different time.  Zoom lessons turned out to be a blessing in disguise, and we continue doing them to this day.”

- Jeff, current student

“After I retired about 5 years ago,  I sought out activities that would be fulfilling and keep me mentally alert. As someone who played folk music in the 60s but had not played the guitar in many years, I decided to work with Jason to l really learn how to play.

It has been both challenging and fun as I have learned a great deal about finger picking and reading music. When Jason took up posting on  Patreon, that also added value in my perception. I’m not yet ready for prime time, but I do feel like I’ve learned a lot and am enjoying my weekly lessons.

Jason is a great guy to work with and I recommend both his lessons and Patreon as good ways to develop one’s guitar music skills.”
