A little bit about my musical journey thus far…
I've had a rich and varied musical life.
Before I graduated from Connecticut College I spent time at the Berklee College of Music in Boston learning the fundamentals of music theory, sight reading, ear training and guitar technique. After college I spent years in New York City working as a guitarist for many artists including John Cale, Linda Thompson, Marshall Crenshaw and Teddy Thompson. Later I got involved in creating music for film, ads, art installations and other media forms.
I started teaching while still in college over thirty years ago, after which I taught privately in the New York City area for ten years. Later I taught at the Concord Community Music School in Concord, NH, as well has at Berwick Academy in South Berwick, ME. For the past thirteen years I have been on the faculty at the Portsmouth Music and Arts Center in Portsmouth, NH.
I have worked with students ages eight to eighty and I am convinced that everyone has the capacity to learn and develop solid skills regardless of age. The only requirement is a desire to learn.
Making discoveries on an instrument, making connections on an instrument - for a student - even if they’re not going to become a professional musician - it helps in all areas of their life.
They’re processing things by taking something big and turning it into smaller pieces. When you see somebody go from a point A to a point B on their instrument you feel like you’ve helped them learn and internalize something fundamental and important.
